After Sam makes it down to the ground again, he finds himself in at an abandoned Russian oil platform in the Arctic. Just as he is about to leave, Brand tells him it's too late to save his friends and convinces him to give up fighting, but Sam shrugs it off and escapes by parachuting from Brand's plane.

Once back on base, Quinn informs Sam that they have been unable to reach Carter and Mikhail, so Sam and Rodriguez go back into Rome to rescue them. Sam and his friends manage to get out alive and head back to base. The HAARP activates, causing the volcano to erupt and fill the ruins of Pompeii with lava. Once setting up the final beacon, Brand orders that the HAARP be activated, despite Sam and his team not being a safe distance away from Mount Vesuvius. The team set up 8 beacons to activate the array, but Jones is killed during the mission after being eaten by a Khnum. Meanwhile, Carter and Mikhail make their way to Rome to find the Holy Grail. To find a way to get back into Rome, Sam and his companions retreat to a base in Pompeii, where they suggest utilizing the seismic capabilites of the HAARP complex to trigger an eruption on Mount Vevusius that will force Achriman's air forces to be grounded. Since the team have no other choice, they are forced to abandon the city. On the way to the Vatican, the convey is attacked by enemy forces led by Lord Achriman, one of Mental's servants overseeing the invasion in Europe.
